Tim’s Career
Tim Shepherd proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, where he was activated for Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield as a combat engineer and M-60 machine gunner. After proudly serving his country, he received an honorable discharge. He always had a commitment to continue serving his community.
Tim began his law enforcement career in 1998 with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, where he served the citizens of Montgomery County for more than 17 years, ultimately reaching the rank of Patrol Lieutenant. During his time with the Sheriff’s Office, he earned multiple professional certifications, and received numerous Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) awards for his work removing impaired drivers from the road.
Tim volunteered for the Sheriff’s Office TACT Team and completed the Virginia State Police SWAT Team School. Serving as the team’s number two operator, he frequently entered first during high-risk operations, leading with a weapon in hand.
Following his service with the Sheriff’s Office, Tim continued protecting the community through law enforcement positions with the Salem Police Department and the Carilion Clinic Police Department, where he currently serves as a Sergeant. Throughout his career, Tim has made hundreds of DUI arrests and has remained committed to keeping our roads and neighborhoods safe.
Tim holds an Associate’s Degree in Police Science from New River Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University. In November 2026, he will complete a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. He also completed advanced law enforcement training, including the FBI Supervisors School and FBI Tactical Medic School, and maintains certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
